the university of kentucky strives diverse , international student population, selective admissions process.

in fall 2014, there 30,000 students enrolled first time. due in part high number of out-of-state students. percentage mix of students @ time 62% in state , 38% out-of-state. during time, freshman class recorded @ 5,000 students.

student government

the university of kentucky student government association (uksga) represents undergraduate, graduate , professional students enrolled @ university in several critical ways. uksga exists increase student influence on academic policy , provide many helpful, creative , necessary student services. uksga exists protect , expand student substantive , procedural rights university , surrounding municipalities. finally, uksga exists better represent student body in relations faculty, administration, board of trustees , commonwealth of kentucky.

uksga includes executive, legislative, , judicial branch.

executive branch: oversees day-to-day operations, manages budget, , facilitates major programs.
legislative branch: includes student senate. there 46 legislators in branch. goal allocate funds, approve presidential appointments, facilitate legislative changes, , represent larger student voice.
judicial: composed of 1 chief justice , 6 supreme court justices. supreme court rules on constitutionality of legislation, handles claims levied against sga officials, hears election rules violation complaints , validates election results.

student media

the electrical , computer engineering department home of 1 of earliest college amateur radio stations in united states, beginning w4jp began continuous operation prior world war i. in 1927, station relicensed 9jl (later w9jl).

students run 2 independent fm stations. first, 91.3 fm wuky, triple-a station , first university-owned fm radio station in united states , kentucky s first public radio station. operations started on october 17, 1940 wbky out of beattyville, although station moved 5 years later lexington.

in 1971, wbky 1 of first carry npr s things considered , helped debut national public radio, changing call letters wuky in 1989 better reflect affiliation university. in 2007, became first lexington radio station broadcast in high-definition digital radio. second 88.1 fm wrfl has been in operation since 1988. wrfl operated students , broadcasts live 24 hours day, 7 days week, , features music spread across genres.

the campus served kentucky kernel, student-run, financially independent daily newspaper, first issue published in 1915. official yearbook of university of kentucky kentuckian, first published in 1906. kentuckian preceded @ least 1 previous book, echo.

greek life

nineteen sororities , twenty-three fraternities serve university, representing on 3,000 students budget of $3.2 million per year. governing bodies include national pan-hellenic council, organization 9 historically black organizations, international greek assemblies, national panhellenic conference sororities , interfraternity council fraternities. there many non-greek organizations on campus, alpha kappa psi, internationally recognized professional business fraternity , tau beta sigma, band fraternity. university hosts chapter of alpha phi omega co-educational service fraternity.

athletics

beginning in 1890s, students @ a&m scheduled football games neighboring colleges. in 1902, women s basketball program began on campus, , men s team added 1 year later. wildcats became associated university shortly after football victory on illinois on october 9, 1909. then-chief of military department, commandant carbuiser, stated team had fought wildcats. slogan later adopted university, , costumed mascot debuted in 1976.

in 1930, then-high school coach adolph rupp hired basketball coach university. had career span 42 years until 1972. during tenure, led men s basketball team 4 ncaa championships in 1948, 1949, 1951 , 1958. wildcats later won fifth championship under joe b. hall in 1978, in 1996 under rick pitino , next under orlando tubby smith in 1998. in 2007, university of kentucky named billy gillispie head coach of men s basketball team , on march 30, 2009, university named john calipari head coach of wildcats. calipari coached team eighth national title in 2012.

on december 21, 2009, men s basketball team reached milestone, becoming first college basketball team reach 2000 all-time wins. 2000th win 88–44 victory on drexel dragons. kentucky first school reach 1000 all-time wins, accomplished in 1969.

the university boasts of numerous national championships, latest coming in 2012 when men s basketball team won eighth national title. uk boasts of cross country national team championship (women s, 1988), 8 individual championships in gymnastics, olympic medalist in track , field, , 21 national championships in cheerleading. after defeating number-one ranked oklahoma 13–7 in sugar bowl under legendary coach bear bryant, kentucky ncaa-recognized co-national champion 1950 season.
