she returned israel on board ship ruslan , while joined small agricultural kibbutz degania, settlement neighboring previous home @ kinneret. however, shortly after arrival diagnosed tuberculosis, incurable disease. unable work children fear of contagion, expelled degania , left fend herself. in 1925 lived briefly in small white house in courtyard of william holman hunt house @ no. 64 street of prophets in jerusalem. spent rest of life traveling , living in tel aviv, eking out living providing private lessons in hebrew , french, , settled in sanatorium tuberculosis patients in gedera.


rachel died on april 16, 1931 in tel aviv, @ age of 40. buried in kinneret cemetery in grave overlooking sea of galilee, following wishes expressed in poem if fate decrees. alongside buried many of socialist ideologues , pioneers of second , third waves of immigration. naomi shemer buried near rachel, according shemer s wish.
