history

at time of alexander mcdonnell s appointment locomotive superintendent of north eastern railway (ner), modern express passenger locomotives 2-4-0s of edward fletcher s 901 class, 55 of had been built between 1872 , 1882, , giving service. however, of fletcher s designs, there lack of standardisation; 3 different builders had been involved in construction, each being given freedom vary design saw fit.


mcdonnell set designing new class of express passenger locomotives, incorporated number of departures established ner practice. of these significant, such use of leading bogie on express locomotive; others purely cosmetic, such shape of chimney. biggest change driving position placed on left-hand side of cab, instead of right – drivers did not change @ all, , found fault of other unfamiliar features. pressure put on mcdonnell resigned in september 1884. despite this, uncompleted orders allowed stand, apart last batch of 8 cancelled; components had been manufactured these incorporated 0-6-0t locomotives henry tennant s locomotive committee designed; these became 8 class (lner j74).


construction

like other ner classes introduced prior 1885, these locomotives not given classification @ first; t.w. worsdell, having placed own designs in lettered classes, organised others classes given identification based upon number of 1 of class members; these accordingly became 38 class, no. 38 being 1 of gateshead-built locos.


initially placed in service on main line duties, relegated less important jobs. these included newcastle , carlisle line, had several of hawthorn engines, , secondary services york, malton, whitby , scarborough.


rebuilding

between august 1895 , august 1900, locomotives had original boilers replaced standard boilers of worsdell design, of type used on several other ner locomotives, such 901 , 1440 classes, class l, class o , class p. new boilers had smaller fireboxes, had increased heating surface , water circulation space compared originals.


withdrawal

in january 1915, nos. 231, 1495/8 withdrawn service; end of year, further ten had been withdrawn. remainder followed @ intervals between 1917 , 1921, leaving 1 locomotive, no. 281, still in service @ start of 1923, when ner became constituent of newly formed london , north eastern railway (lner); withdrawn service in february 1923, , never allocated lner classification.
