shiraz wrote , published poetry. author of popular patriotic , love poems included ani , mother , may love remain secret , siamanto , khjezare , expromptu , pagan love , holy homeland , fate of armenians , andranik , etc. wrote armenian dante-esque armenian genocide, subject banned in soviet union. first version of masterpiece written in 1941. short passages work published in soviet armenia during lifetime, , chapters published in beirut , tehran. entire poem (over 8000 lines) published in 1990 in yerevan.


he buried @ komitas pantheon, in yerevan, along other distinguished armenians.


he first married famous armenian poet silva kaputikyan. son kaputikyan, ara shiraz, sculptor. shiraz had 7 children second wife, shushanik shiraz (aristakesyan, 1937-2006). 1 of sons, sipan shiraz, poet.


yerevan school #169 , street in julfa of isfahan named after him. hovhannes shiraz’s house-museum located in nineteenth-century building in gyumri.
