camp bothin officially known bothin youth center, girl scout summer camp. since 1948 has been located in marin county, california. site managed girl scouts of northern california , supported through private foundation grants , individual donations.


convalescent home

in 1905 camp bothin established hill farm , convalescent home women , children, near fairfax, california, on property owned henry e. bothin. before antibiotics, medicine had few treatments other rest , food many illnesses, tuberculosis (tb). patients housed in old farmhouse. normally, hill farm home 30 patients, during summer mild climate allowed many 60, housed in tents , slept on cots. during time, miss elizabeth h. ashe director.


in 1910, officers formed corporation named bothin convalescent home women , children. mr. bothin deeded 152 acres (62 ha) of land corporation. old farm house torn down , rustic building, known manor house, erected accommodate 40 patients. had deep sleeping porches (fresh air considered important tb patients) , outdoor dining room.


that same year arequipa sanatorium, directed dr. philip king brown, opened serve women in first stages of tb. @ time, known treatment rest , nutrition, in hopes lungs recover , heal. name arequipa, taken city in peru, said native american word signifying place of rest. following 1906 san francisco earthquake, dust- , ash-filled air had contributed tuberculosis epidemic in san francisco.


with of local artists , members of area s philanthropic community, dr. brown introduced therapeutic handcrafts women, combat idleness , avoid stigma of charity. hospital hired potter frederick hurten rhead teach patients , develop pottery studio. work arequipa pottery highly prized among collectors. in 1913 rhead dismissed not being sufficiently businesslike, led students experiment glazes , techniques, , tried best materials them. successor @ pottery directed reduce production costs.


in 1917, bothin helping fund incorporated. organization, known bothin foundation, responsible raising $30,000 needed build stone house. here professional , business women come rest , recuperate after illness.


as treatment methods tb changed, need bothin convalescent hospital reduced. bothin property abandoned 1922 1940.


girl scout camp

in 1948, miss ashe offered small building known little house san francisco girl scouts troop camping. few years later made manor house available girl scout use, , 1955 entire bothin property offered council use. girl scouts developed property camp, , added swimming pool. changed name henry e. bothin youth center.


in 1950s, arequipa closed hospital. in 1959 property leased girl scouts. 1963 both sides of property began operate henry e. bothin youth center.
