the cosmonaut alexei leonov fictional soviet spaceship in novel 2010: odyssey two, , film adaptation 2010. named after soviet air force general alexey leonov, first man walk in space.

in book, leonov described being equipped sakharov drive, fictional new method of propulsion makes possible craft make round-trip jupiter. craft uses large heatshield aerobrake in jupiter s outer atmosphere, saving fuel. in recognition of alexei leonov, after whom craft named, there framed painting cosmonaut in mess room. russians said view gravity more or less luxury , leonov not have artificial gravity. ship christened gherman titov, changed later undisclosed reasons; character in film version offers cryptic explanation people [presumably referring either titov or involved current mission] fall out of favor , not elaborate.

the tsien fictional chinese spacecraft - named after chinese rocket engineer tsien hsue-shen - featured in novel 2010: odyssey two, did not appear in film 2010. during course of novel, tsien, new chinese earth-orbiting space station, unexpectedly leaves on secret mission jupiter. after burning of fuel reach jupiter before cosmonaut alexei leonov, tsien makes perfect landing on europa, prompting china lay claim moon. character heywood floyd interprets actions attempt chinese use europa refuelling point, after can rendezvous discovery 1 , alien artifact @ io-jupiter l1 point before joint russian-american team. before can leave europa, ship destroyed primitive life dwelling beneath surface of moon.
