the lifeboat station first established in 1879, , launched davits on pier in similar manner today. between 1885 , 1891 there second station on mainland, boat launched horse-drawn carriage. first motor lifeboat arrived in 1928. in 1935, new lifeboat house , slipway erected @ pier head. in 1940, lifeboat greater london 1 of 19 lifeboats assisted in evacuation of dunkirk.
in 1955 prove southend s final all-weather lifeboat went on station. newly built greater london ii (civil service no.30), 46ft 9in watson-class, entered service on 3 april. until 1968, thames estuary covered 3 similar slipway launched 46ft 9in watsons stationed on seaside piers @ clacton on sea, southend on sea , margate. clacton s watson replaced 37ft oakley in 1968 , following year new lifeboat station opened @ sheerness on opposite side of thames estuary southend. late 1960s, inflatable inshore lifeboats in use @ southend provide assistance increasing number of pleasure craft. in 1974, sheerness allocated fast waveney-class boat , 2 years later southend s weather watson class lifeboat withdrawn , replaced inshore atlantic 21 class percy garon. kept in 1935 pier head boathouse, in 1986 coaster kings abbey sliced through pier , lifeboat slipway, badly damaging lifeboat house. temporary station re-established @ pierhead, , officially opened in 1991. temporary station used until 2002, when today s modern boathouse opened.
in 2004, new shore boathouse completed accommodate new hovercraft, vera ravine, placed in service.
