biography
early life , rise fame

martin born in sutherlin, virginia, east of danville. mother stage mother, , father , uncle both musicians. before six, martin singing , playing guitar, inspired eddy arnold , hank williams. on years, resulted in statewide contests on 200 contestants, won. result, janis asked play on same bill cowboy copas , sunshine sue. through them janis became member of old dominion barndance on wrva, came out of richmond every saturday night on cbs network. when in mid-teens, appearing country singers including arnold, hank snow, browns , jim reeves. claimed tired of country music , began rock , roll career.

the wrva station announcer, carl stutz, wrote song called willyum , , asked janis sing song live on stage saturday night make demo tape , send publisher in new york. week after recording, stutz called janis rca victor interested in recording willyum . happened, publisher offered song steve sholes, producer @ rca victor , asked whether sholes had artist record willyum . apparently sholes replied, well, s girl doin demo?


at age 15, martin signed rca victor in march 1956, 2 months after elvis presley joined label. recorded willyum on march 8, 1956, backed own composition, drugstore rock n roll .


the song became biggest hit of career, selling 750,000 records , hitting country , pop charts. martin performing on american bandstand, today show , tonight starring steve allen. appeared on jubilee usa, , grand ole opry in nashville, tennessee, becoming 1 of younger performers ever appear. billboard named promising female vocalist year.


presley , rca impressed stage presence, dubbed female elvis. presley sent dozen red roses martin when appeared @ rca victor convention in miami, florida. colonel tom parker, elvis manager, offered take on management seeing potential of successful double boy-girl bill. before, due extremely taxing touring schedule, elvis had collapsed on stage in new york due exhaustion. safeguarding young janis this, parents decided not accept parkers offer, , instead go head of old dominion shows. chosen rca tour member of jim reeves show , continued recording rock , roll , country material ended being successful on both charts, including boy elvis , let s elope baby , cover of roy orbison s song ooby dooby , , love me pieces .

later career

by 1960, martin on second marriage, , husband demanded leave music business. in 1970s, began performing again newly formed band, variations. in 1975, working halifax, virginia police department when music historian, dennis west tracked down. edd bayes record collector maryland asked dennis address dennis gave him. coaxed appear locally , tell story in goldmine magazine. martin toured through europe part of rockabilly revival there, , in 1979 bayes convinced rca release 4 martin songs in vault. released on dog gone records in 1977. edd bayes took 1 of songs had been recorded twice ( love me love ) @ different tempos , added cha cha title. in 1980s, bear family label gathered martin s complete record history compilation album female elvis. since 1980s janis started performing again @ rockabilly shows through europe , us. 1 of live shows released on cd called here hydra records. in 1995, martin appeared on rosie flores s rockabilly filly album hightone records. flores recorded unreleased album martin 6 months before death. these recordings released blanco sessions cow island music on september 18, 2012.


death

martin died cancer on september 3, 2007, @ duke university medical center in durham, north carolina. son, kevin parton, died january.
