plot

in 1850 in germany clara s family celebrating on christmas eve. clara jealous because older sister, louise, has boyfriend, leaving feeling sad , wondering growing up. cheers when eccentric uncle drosselmeier arrives @ home special gifts: automated toy castle everyone, , nutcracker clara.

upon giving nutcracker, clara s little brother, fritz, breaks it. cheer clara up, drosselmeier tells story how nutcracker came prince of dolls.

the story of hard nut

once upon time there king , queen had beautiful, vain , normal daughter named pirlipat. celebrate king s birthday, queen made special cake out of blue cheese, king s favorite. however, scent of cheese drew out mice, ate , destroyed cake. king enraged , commanded inventor, elias christian drosselmeier, capture mice. drosselmeier , nephew, hans, successful in capturing mice, except mouse queen , son.

in revenge, mouse queen casts spell on pirlipat, causing become unusually ugly , weird. drosselmeier once again given task of figuring out how cure her. learned fabled krakatooth nut can cure her, on condition cracked open in teeth of young man has never worn boots. king commanded princes , noblemen apply, promise of marrying pirlipat once cured.

however, krakatooth hard men s teeth shatter upon trying crack it. drosselmeier beheaded being unable cure pirlipat when hans steps in. manages crack nut open between teeth , gives pirlipat, breaking spell. angered mouse queen casts spell on hans, turning him prince of dolls (in other words, nutcracker). during ruckus, killed falling statue, , son s tail caught , bent. survives , declares himself mouse king.

drosselmeier exiled kingdom trying pass nutcracker son-in-law , while king , queen celebrate now-cured daughter. drosselmeier holds nutcracker hans has become, mouse king vows revenge upon hans ruining tail ( , if think beloved nephew hans ugly now, ha! wait till turn him pile of splinters! ).

revenge of mouse king

clara upset story unhappy ending, consoled when drosselmeier tells spell can broken if defeats mouse king , wins hand of fair maiden. while playing toy soldiers, clara s brother fritz breaks nutcracker. clara heartbroken, drosselmeier promises fix her. night, when has gone sleep, clara ventures sitting room dance nutcracker , introduces him dolls, trudy, marie , pantaloon, old general in fritz s toy soldier army.

suddenly mouse king , army of mice arrive, intent on getting revenge on nutcracker injured tail, mother s death. drosselmeier appears on grandfather clock , brings nutcracker , dolls , soldiers in room life. nutcracker, has no memories following being transformed, battles mouse king, while soldiers fight mice. clara saves nutcracker mouse king throwing slipper @ him.

the first battle comes halt, though, when slips on cannonball , crashes clock, losing consciousness rest of night. next morning, awakens in own bed , tries tell mother battle, told rest. drosselmeier visits repaired lifeless nutcracker, giving vague answers clara s questions previous night.

the next night, mouse king returns, angry clara has done. before can go after nutcracker once more, clara tricks him, briefly trapping him in drawer, in bedside table in room. however, when retrieves unawakened toy, mouse king has escaped , threatens harm kitten, pavlova, if doesn t hand nutcracker over. suddenly, drosselmeier reappears, , toys awaken once more.

the nutcracker tells clara not worry, cut mouse king. leads fearsome fight under christmas tree. mouse king supposedly defeated when stabbed in chest , falls off tree death. leaderless army of mice run away amid cheering toys. when see pantaloon has been injured in fight, have return land of dolls revive him.

clara shrunken down doll size drosselmeier s magic, , enter land of dolls through toy castle. leave, pavlova goes inspect mouse king s body, frightened away when mouse king opens eyes.

the nutcracker, clara, pantaloon, trudy , marie arrive @ land of dolls on flying swans, passing forests of christmas trees , arriving @ palace made of sweets. once there, pantaloon cured. nutcracker given royal welcome prince of dolls amid many cheering toys. clara shares romantic dance nutcracker, takes hand , gets down on 1 knee. asks stay him , princess.

clara ready embrace childhood fantasies , beloved companion, sadly refuses; wishes could, adventures of growing , family still waiting her. dolls start turn inanimate toys, , dying mouse king arrives 1 last chance @ revenge. nutcracker tries save her, turns toy himself. clara tries keep mouse king @ bay, corners on balcony.

as strikes, plummets death, taking clara him. clara pulls herself , finds castle abandoned. begins sobbing nutcracker mist fills lonely palace.

home again

clara wakes find herself home. there no sign of events has experienced except brother s statement pavlova discovered large dead mouse near toy castle. clara rushes downstairs find nutcracker missing. runs uncle drosselmeier s workshop seems expecting her. begs him tell whether fairytale told true or false.

clara silenced when young boy enters room, carrying big clock. drosselmeier introduces boy nephew hans, whom clara recognizes beloved nutcracker in human form. film ends hans , clara addressing each other. hello, clara, hans says, , replies, hello, nutcracker .
