in months leading december 2003, there speculation whether president chen choose vice president annette lu running mate. polls had consistently showed chen better candidate such taipei county administrator su tseng-chang or kaohsiung mayor frank hsieh , many of dpp s popular lawmakers had petitioned chen consider candidate. after several weeks of public infighting between various factions of dpp, chen formally nominated lu running mate on december 11. backed pan-green coalition.
the existence of 2 tickets on ballot led several protest movements against both coalitions - notably alliance of 1 million invalid ballots - asking people disqualify ballots on purpose. partly responsible high number of invalid votes compared 2000 election.
