the couesnon, sée , sélune form part of complex water system of bay of mont saint-michel. on 1 side, tide brings large quantities of sediment cause large sandbars within river. on other, 3 watercourses drive sediment out sea.
in 20th century, couesnon turned canal, reduce erosion of banks. in 1969, dam built. these modifications, , causeway linking mont saint-michel mainland, have caused buildup of mudflats. prevent mont becoming connected mainland, plans in place replace causeway bridge, , modify dam sediment can once again driven out sea.
during spring tides, tidal bore — wave caused incoming tide — can seen working way river.
