history

in 1946 nevada area council, boy scouts of america chartered wiyaka lodge, order of arrow, replace tribe of nacopen council s honor camper society. wiyaka , sioux word feather, chosen camp director larry lake , used lodge name until 1961. in 1961, after rather stagnant period, lodge underwent period of restructuring, , new name , totem deemed in order. pronghorn antelope chosen new totem , tannu , shoshone-paiute word antelope or deer became new lodge name.


during 1960s lodge grew in membership, and, 1 of larger lodges in old area 12-c, hosted area 12-c conference @ galena creek. lodge prospered, ability fulfill mission in promoting scout camping grew well. in 1972 lodge earned e. urner goodman camping award excellence in promotion of camping program. during mid-1970s lodge experienced downswing in membership , activity rebounded under new leadership toward end of decade.


in 1974 lodge hosted w3b conclave @ sky tavern. in 1982 received e. urner goodman award second time, feat considered quite rare. in 1986 tannu lodge hosted section w3b conclave @ stead, nevada. in 1996, hosted section w3b conclave @ naval air station fallon , celebrated 50th anniversary.


in 2005, ross armstrong tannu lodge served western region chief order of arrow. received distinguished service award @ 2006 national order of arrow conference. in 2010, armstrong publicly came out gay , wrote boy scouts of america s need end ban on gay scouts , scouters.


tannu lodge part of section w-3b, best section, spans eureka down bakersfield, california.
