walter arizona native, born in scottsdale. moved colorado @ age of 10, later attended grand junction high school in grand junction, colorado. all-conference selection junior , senior , usa today honorable mention all-american.
prior nfl career, walter played quarterback hometown school, arizona state university (asu) earned ba in communication. walter completed collegiate career numerous pacific-10 conference records including, career touchdowns (85) , yards passing in game (536). set numerous school records, include passing yards (10,616), completions (777), touchdowns (85), , total offense (10,142).
2001 season
walter s redshirt freshman season @ arizona state university saw limited playing time behind sophomore starter jeff krohn, including reserve duty in losing effort against university of oregon. after 4–7 record under new head coach dirk koetter , 1 win in pacific-10 conference, krohn transferred out of asu following season.
2002 season
with opening @ quarterback, walter seemed favorite going season start. turned out not case, however, when walter kept backup after redshirt freshman, chad christiansen, had impressive spring , fall practices.
in september 2002 sun devils fell behind san diego state university aztecs 22-0. christiansen largely ineffective , replaced walter. walter entered game protective boot due injury sustained during previous week of practice. injury did not prove factor walter connected wide receiver shaun mcdonald 72-yard touchdown pass on first play scrimmage. walter s second pass scrimmage ended touchdown. asu came beat aztecs, 39-28, in largest come-from-behind win in asu history.
later in season, asu put impressive win streak, , beat #6 oregon @ autzen stadium in eugene, oregon, ducks had lost 1 game @ autzen on previous 4 seasons. after falling behind 21-0 in second quarter, walter led sun devils 45-42 upset win on ducks, breaking pac-10 single game record passing 536 yards.
asu ended regular season 8-5 record , upset kansas state wildcats, favored 17 points on devils, in 2002 holiday bowl. although asu narrowly lost contest 34-27 (relinquishing lead once, in closing minute of game), walter achieved asu single season passing record 3,877 yards.
2003 season
2003 marked disappointing season walter , sun devils. asu started season ranked @ #15 put disappointing performances against traditionally weaker opponents northern arizona university , utah state university. sun devils suffered first loss @ university of iowa, losing 21-2 hawkeyes. despite sun devils achieving 5-7 record (2-6 in pac-10), walter still threw 3,044 yards, including game-winning touchdown against north carolina time expired. walter earned territorial cup mvp when asu beat arch-rivals university of arizona @ sun devil stadium. @ end of 2003 season, walter decided forgo opportunity jump nfl , decided stay @ arizona state last year of eligibility.
2004 season
walter s senior campaign featured number of highs , lows. walter lead sun devils comeback year devils piled 8-3 record , clinched berth in vitalis sun bowl. walter surpassed practically every asu quarterback in every statistic. walter surpassed nfl legend john elway pac-10 s time touchdown leader. during 2004 season, walter helped devils defeat #15 iowa 44-7. low point of season came when walter went down in fourth quarter during regular season finale against arizona , suffered third degree shoulder separation, forcing him miss sun devils post-season sun bowl game (a 27-23 victory on purdue).
