patterson hall, school s first women s dormitory, constructed in 1904. residents had cross swampy depression, student center stands, reach central campus. 4 years later, school s name changed state university, lexington, kentucky upon reaching university status, , university of kentucky in 1916. university led creation of college of home economics in 1916, , mary e. sweeney promoted chair of department of home economics dean of college. (later renamed college of human environmental sciences, educational unit folded college of agriculture in 2003 school of human environmental sciences). college of commerce established in 1925, known today gatton college of business , economics.


in 1929, memorial hall completed, dedicated 2,756 kentuckians died in world war i. followed new king library, opened in 1931 , named long-time library director, margaret i. king. university s graduate , professional programs became racially integrated in 1949 when lyman t. johnson, african american, won lawsuit admitted graduate program. african americans not allowed attend undergraduates until 1954, following supreme court s brown v. board of education decision.


in 1939, governor happy chandler appointed first woman trustee on university of kentucky board of trustees, georgia m. blazer of ashland. served 1939 1960. in 1962, blazer hall opened georgia m blazer hall [dormitory] women in tribute twenty-one years of service university of kentucky trustee.


ground broken albert b. chandler hospital in 1955, when governor of kentucky happy chandler recommended kentucky general assembly appropriate $5 million creation of university of kentucky college of medicine , medical center @ university. completed after series of studies conducted highlighted health needs of citizens, need train more physicians state. 5 years later, college of medicine , college of nursing opened, followed college of dentistry in 1962.

in 1959, patterson school of diplomacy , international commerce opened , began training professionals @ master s , doctoral level careers in international affairs. program vision of uk s first president james kennedy patterson had identified need united states develop cadre of professionals advance diplomatic , commercial interests around globe. patterson bequeathed entire estate establish entity.


authorized kentucky general assembly , signed governor bert combs on march 6, 1962, mandate placed upon university of kentucky form community college system. 2 years later, board of trustees implements legislation , established community college system, creating centers in covington, ashland, fort knox, cumberland, henderson , elizabethtown. in 1969, patterson office tower completed, tallest building on campus.

in may 1970, students @ university began protesting shootings @ kent state university. in response, governor louie nunn deferred national guard in attempt disperse protesters. outdated rotc building destroyed fire. louie b. nunn center oral history @ university of kentucky libraries has 13 oral history interviews participants in protests, university officials former governor nunn. 9 years later, singletary center arts opened, named in honor of former university president otis singletary. in 1979, university of kentucky hosted first kentucky women writers conference, longest-running conference of kind. kentucky women writers conference in 31st year.
