the son of georg schenck van toutenburg, graduated in law @ reichskammergericht in speyer. after being made priest, became archdeacon of pieterskerk in bishopric of utrecht , priest @ sint-plechelmusbasiliek in oldenzaal.he spent time writing tracts on church law until promoted dutch episcopate in 1559 philip ii, named him first archbishop of utrecht (which confirmed in 1561 pope pius iv). until time, bishopric of utrecht reported archbishop of cologne. agreement between philip ii , rome in spirit of counter-reformation, low countries (at time loose set of seventeen provinces) received own archbishoprics, besides utrecht mechelen , cambrai. attempt give various parts of low countries self-government way of fending off protestant reformation. these measures not successful, , scheck van toutenburg s archbishopric saw catholic reaction against council of trent in northern netherlands. governor margaret of parma forced him lead support decrees of council of trent , led him call provincial synod in 1565. clergy , canons fiercely opposed new disciplinary measures , tried frustrate introduction, schenck van toutenburg used power break opposition , give leadership in fight against protestantism.
