on 5 september 1979 mountbatten received ceremonial funeral @ westminster abbey, attended queen, royal family , members of european royal houses. watched thousands of people, funeral procession, started @ wellington barracks, included representatives of 3 british armed services, , military contingents burma, india, united states, france , canada. coffin drawn on gun carriage 118 royal navy ratings. during televised service, prince of wales read lesson psalm 107. in address, archbishop of canterbury, donald coggan, highlighted various achievements , lifelong devotion royal navy . after public ceremonies, had planned himself, mountbatten buried in romsey abbey. part of funeral arrangements, body had been embalmed desmond henley.
