early career

born in easington, county durham, tate began career trainee @ manchester united, later earning himself professional contract. although went on captain united s reserve team, included such players quinton fortune, luke chadwick , chris eagles, failed break first team. tate went on loan royal antwerp, manchester united s feeder club, in 2002, making 7 appearances in belgian first division. did not score royal antwerp in 2 months there, did score own goal against gent on 17 february 2002, first goal in 3–3 draw.

tate spent 2 loan periods @ swansea city. played major role in club s battle against relegation football league in 2002–03 season, before joining club on permanent basis on 6 february 2004.

initially centre-back, tate made successful transition right-back slot. further showed versatility playing several matches in centre of midfield during injury crisis @ club during 2005–06 season, saw him named club s player of year. tate in swansea city team won football league trophy final against carlisle united on 2 april 2006. after final whistle, , lee trundle photographed holding welsh flag bearing words fuck off cardiff, had been handed them swansea supporters. pair claimed have been unaware of message written on flag. on 24 june 2006, both players fined week s wages , warned future conduct football association of wales, having received police cautions public order offences.

on 28 august 2011, tate broke leg in golf cart accident, managing lodge leg between cart , tree. injury estimated rule him out 6 months. despite this, tate signed new contract swansea on 14 september 2011, keeping him @ club until june 2015. tate made comeback late substitute swansea in penultimate match of 2011–12 season @ old trafford appearing against former club, manchester united.

a testimonial tate against manchester united granted swansea in summer of 2013. however, postponed because swansea scheduled play manchester united in first premier league fixture of 2013–14 season. 4 years later, in august 2017, tate s testimonial rescheduled , set played @ liberty stadium on 9 august swansea legends team facing manchester united legends team.

as of 30 august 2013, tate has made 340 appearances swansea, scoring 5 goals in competitions. excludes faw premier cup, swansea competed in 1997 2008.

tate revealed exit club in summer 2015. confirmed swansea on 28 may 2015.

0n 21 july 2016 announced tate take academy u18 coaching role, , coach swans under-18s team alongside eric ramsay , chris llewellyn taking charge of matches u17s play in coming campaign.

loan spells

after falling out swansea manager michael laudrup, tate joined leeds united on loan on 22 november 2012 until january 2013. tate represented first signing leeds after takeover gfh capital previous day. tate made debut leeds against crystal palace on 24 november , handed squad number 15. tate received praise performance s against crystal palace , leicester city, helping leeds earn 2 wins in first 2 matches.

after takeover of leeds gfh capital on 21 december, new leeds director salem patel revealed leeds in negotiations swansea city sign tate on permanent deal. on 1 january, tate extended loan spell @ leeds until 26 january.

on 23 july 2013, tate joined championship side yeovil town on loan until 2 january 2014. upon joining club, club made announcement of signing producing mocked-up picture of easel outside huish park following arrival of duke , duchess of cambridge s son day before. tate made yeovil debut in 1–0 victory on millwall on 3 august 2013. tate made 6 appearances yeovil before returning swansea on 5 september due hamstring injury.

on 3 january 2014, tate joined scottish premiership side aberdeen emergency signing replace departed reading defender michael hector, on loan until end of 2013–14 season. made aberdeen debut on 10 january in 1–0 home win against hibernian.

tate joined crewe alexandra on 24 september 2014 emergency 93-day loan, extended in january 2015 end of 2014–15 season. tate made 26 appearances railwaymen, helping them maintain league 1 status.

on 2 november 2015, announced tate joining welsh premier league club port talbot town.
