early development of wfs started in 1988 delft university. further work carried out in context of carrouso project european union (january 2001 june 2003), included ten institutes. wfs sound system iosono developed fraunhofer institute digital media technology (idmt) technical university of ilmenau.


loudspeaker arrays implementing wfs have been installed in cinemas , theatres , in public spaces success. first live wfs transmission took place in july 2008, recreating organ recital @ cologne cathedral in lecture hall 104 of technical university of berlin. room contains world’s largest speaker system 2700 loudspeakers on 832 independent channels.


development of home-audio application of wfs has begun, e.g. foundation of sonic emotion in 2002—which implements wave field synthesis technology in sound bars home cinema.


sonic emotion develops hardware processor, sonic wave i, began used in enterntainment industry field, live music , thearter, allowing use wave field synthesis approach few loudspeakers. general idea limit rendering virtual sound sources positionned behind loudspeakers curtain. version 5, sonic emotion allows native 3d, elevation, rendering, given loudpeakers positionned @ different heights.
