the unveiling of blue plaque in 2015 in memory of professor barlow on former home @ no 1 pilrig street, edinburgh, in presence of lord provost, rt hon donald wilson, professor brendan corcoran royal (dick) school of veterinary studies, university of edinburgh, professor barlow s 2 great grandchildren, antony , nicholas barlow.


in 1851 met eliza nicholson (1813-1894) of whitehaven whom married on new year s day year , moved no. 1 pilrig street. had 3 children – alfred (1851-7), mary (1853-1899) , john henry (1855-1924). contracted meningitis , died acute spinal infection @ age of 40 on 29 january 1856.


eliza left quite off. within short time of money eroded away, due collapse of both clydesdale bank , cornish tin mines. family lived quaker cousins, wigham s in edinburgh later moved carlisle cousins jonathan , jane carr of carr s biscuits brought them up. john henry grew , made life there until moved birmingham in 1900 join george cadbury @ bournville.


professor barlow highly esteemed member of edinburgh quaker community , house family lived @ pilrig street, edinburgh still there. plaque has been erected @ house.
