the couples dance each week in live show. judges score each performance out of ten (with 4 judges giving maximum score of forty). couples ranked according judges scores , given points according rank, lowest scored couple receiving 1 point, , highest scored couple receiving points (the maximum number of points available depends on number of couples remaining in competition). public invited vote favourite couples, , couples ranked again according number of votes receive, again receiving points- couple fewest votes receiving 1 point, , couple votes receiving points.


the points judges score , public vote added together, , 2 couples fewest points placed in bottom 2 (if 2 couples have equal points, points public vote given precedence). previous series, bottom 2 couples have perform dance-off on results show. based on performance alone, each judge votes on couple should stay , couple should leave, goodman (as head judge) having last , casting vote.


however, situation different on 13 december 2008, semi final, when announced in live results show 3 remaining couples going through final, regardless of judges scores , public vote. due tie @ top of leaderboard, made mathematically impossible tom chambers , camilla dallerup avoid dance-off. despite this, viewers encouraged vote, although problem noticed start of results show, shortened 10 minutes. phone votes cast carried on following saturday, final. since then, system has been modified, instead of having traditional tie structure points, such 3-3-1 (as case here), system 3-3-2 used. therefore ensures each couple can mathematically avoid bottom two.
