augusta chiwy united states ambassador belgium denise bauer.


chiwy, daughter of belgian veterinarian bastogne , congolese wife, born in 1921 in belgian congo. returned belgium @ age of nine. in 1940, aged 19, went leuven trained nurse.


on 16 december 1944, day germans launched offensive, chiwy returned family in bastogne christmas. @ time town seemed safely in american hands, within days surrounded german troops advancing belgium during battle of bulge. chiwy attended civilian , military casualties uncle, doctor, until 21 december, when volunteered serve nurse @ first-aid station of 20th armored infantry battalion, 10th armored division, commanded dr. john prior. chiwy worked @ aid station in rue neufchateau, , donned army uniform in order go out field collect wounded while under fire.


on 24 december 1944, first aid station hit german bomb, killing on 30 wounded men , volunteer nurse renee lemaire. chiwy prior in adjoining building , blown through wall, survived unhurt. continued assist american forces until siege lifted 2 days later.


after war chiwy worked @ hospital treating spinal injuries, married belgian soldier , had 2 children.


she spoke of experiences after war, , assumed in historical accounts of battle had died there. british historian martin king, while researching book voices of bulge, tracked down in retirement home near brussels, hearing story, , bringing public attention.


stephen ambrose makes passing reference in book band of brothers, under name anna , , briefly appears in television series based on book, portrayed rebecca okot.


in july 2015 documentary film chiwy entitled searching augusta: forgotten angel of bastogne, produced martin king , directed mike edwards, won emmy award historical documentary.
