school of industrial fisheries
the department of industrial fisheries established in 1976 prime objective of training students meet growing demand qualified personnel in fisheries sector. offers expertise in various branches of fisheries science fishery biology, capture fisheries, aquaculture, fishing technology, fish processing technology, fisheries economics , fisheries management. department upgraded school in 1995 in due recognition of various academic , scientific achievements. 5 divisions viz

the school has developed research partnership more 32 countries in frontier areas of fisheries science such aquaculture, capture fisheries, harvest , post harvest technology , marine biodiversity. activities comprise staff secondment programmes, visit of scientists on short , medium periods, organization of workshops, seminar, symposia, delivering of lectures etc. school has carried out more 10 international , 30 national research projects during past decade funded european commission, nuffic, indo-dutch co-operation, indo-canadian funding assistance, ministry of earth sciences, dod, kscste, icar- frms, adak, dod-ostc, naticar, world bank , unctad among others.

department of atmospheric sciences centre of excellence in teaching research in field of meteorology/atmospheric sciences , located in serene , beautiful lakeside campus of cochin university of science , technology. department started offering 4-semester m.sc course in meteorology since 1975 , 4-semester m.tech course in atmospheric science since 1989. course content of above courses of international standard updating every 3 years. per scheme of government of india entitled new millennium indian technology leadership initiative (nmitli) on mesoscale modelling monsoon related predictions, council scientific , industrial research (csir) has identified department of atmospheric sciences 1 of centres of excellence carry out research work in frontier area along other premier centres such indian institute of technology, delhi; indian institute of tropical meteorology, pune; indian institute of science, bangalore; tata institute of fundamental research, mumbai; c- mmacs, bangalore , national aerospace laboratories, bangalore.
the department has high speed computational facilities, , full-fledged surface weather observatory consisting of automatic weather station, sonic anemometer, micro rain radar, high resolution gps radiosonde etc. has set data bank, has ncep/ncar reanalysis global data, uars data nasa, rocket data, mst radar data, surface weather observations, toms data, etc.

the department of chemical oceanography has credentials of facilities , rich expertise in teaching / research on various chemical aspects of aquatic system. has pioneered investigations in many area of vital significance , has contributed valuable inputs national database. chemical oceanography (marine chemistry) fulcrum interaction between various disciplines of marine sciences.
sophisticated instrumental facilities available in department include uv-vis spectrophotometer, aas, gc, hplc, gc-ms, lc-ms, ftir, polarographic analyzer, laminar flow chambers, etc. department actively engaged in consultancy , extension activities include analytical testing/training, water quality analysis etc.

the department of marine biology, microbiology , biochemistry integral part of school of marine sciences. 1 of first , foremost academic centres in marine biology in country. m.sc programme in marine biology started in 1958. department engaged in research right inception in 1938 , more 100 students have taken ph ds in different areas of marine biology, microbiology , biochemistry.
besides msc , ph d programmes, department offers m phil programme in life sciences. department has excellent infrastructure teaching, research , training in basic , applied frontiers of these disciplines. facilities include sophisticated central instrumentation lab state of art facilities such hplc, transmission electron microscope, freeze drier, fluorescence, uv – visible , atomic absorption spectrophotometers, gas chromatograph, particle size analyser, blood analyser, gel documentation system, water quality

earth science education enhancing relevance , scope globally owing recent advances in geoexploration , role has in environmental , developmental issues. cusat 1 of premier universities in country begin full-fledged post graduate programme in marine geology in year 1976 taking account global advancement in general , national needs in particular in field of marine science. 3-year m.sc (tech.) programme in marine geophysics introduced in 1992 has been restructured 2-year m.sc. programme.

to cater needs of physical oceanographers country, postgraduate programme in oceanography commenced in 1965 @ erstwhile department of marine biology , oceanography under university of kerala later came under physical oceanography , meteorology division (pomd) of university of cochin. in 1996, department of physical oceanography established , course continued offer under department. in 2001, new course in m.tech. ocean technology commenced in department aimed explore technological aspects of oceans benefit of nation.
