early career

tchernyshev began skating @ age of 6 because parents felt health. studied ballet age of eight. singles skater injured landing ankle @ age of 18 , did not heal fully. spent next 3 years touring russian stars in england , turkey before returning competition ice dancer.


tchernyshev skated maria anikanova in late 1980s. later competed olga pershankova russia , soviet union , partner had problems , split up. after girl arrived in russia looking partner, decided move united states.


tchernyshev competed sophie eliazova 3 years until split in summer of 1996.


partnership naomi lang

having noticed naomi lang @ u.s. nationals, tchernyshev wrote letter in mid-1996 asking tryout. had successful tryout in lake placid, new york , trained there 9 months natalia dubova; then, due lang s homesickness, moved detroit , began training igor shpilband , elizabeth coates.


lang/tchernyshev first won u.s. national title in 1999. following season, took gold @ 2000 4 continents championships , placed 8th @ 2000 world championships. performed champions on ice.


in 2000, lang/tchernyshev moved hackensack, new jersey train alexander zhulin, coached them until end of 2001–02 season. missed 2001 grand prix events because tchernyshev had shin splits. returning competition, won fourth national title @ 2002 u.s. championships , won second 4 continents title. placed eleventh @ 2002 winter olympics , ninth @ 2002 world championships.


in 2002–03, lang/tchernyshev coached nikolai morozov. after missing 2002 grand prix events due injury lang, duo won fifth national title @ 2003 u.s. championships, took bronze @ 2003 4 continents, , placed 8th @ 2003 world championships.


lang/tchernyshev did not appear internationally in 2003–04 season. intended compete @ 2004 u.s. championships withdrew after lang re-injured achilles tendon. announced competitive retirement in february 2004. duo continued skate professionally , appeared in several u.s. ice shows, including many of disson skating shows televised on nbc , hallmark channel. toured extensively in europe , russia.


other work

tchernyshev has done choreography competitive skaters. choreographed yuko kavaguti / alexander smirnov (2011-2016 short , free program), sinead kerr / john kerr (2010–2011 free dance), , maia shibutani / alex shibutani (2014-2015 exhibition , 2015-2016 free dance).
