in effect of 1st partition of poland, wadowice annexed austria, incorporated newly established kingdom of galicia, under direct austrian rule, , renamed frauenstadt. town s growth started afterwards, after road linking vienna lwów built. town became seat of communal administration , since 1867 – county site. small industries developing during 19th century. new inhabitants settled in area, attracted industry, new military barracks , various administrative institutions. in addition, new hospital , regional court erected in town centre. finally, in last 25 years of 19th century partial liberalisation of austro-hungarian monarchy led creation of various polish cultural , scientific societies.


after world war , dissolution of monarchy, wadowice became part of newly-reborn poland. seat of powiat remained in town , in 1919 inhabitants of area formed 12th infantry regiment took part in polish-bolshevik war of 1919–1920. in 1920 karol wojtyła born in wadowice (later known bishop of kraków , pope saint john paul ii).

after polish defensive war of 1939, germany occupied area , on 26 october wadowice annexed nazi germany. on 29 december of same year town renamed wadowitz. polish intelligentsia targeted harsh german racial , cultural policies , hundreds of people area, notably priests, teachers , artists, murdered in mass executions. hundreds more expelled , resettled general government in order make place german settlers. between 1941 , 1943 ghetto established in city. entire local jewish population (more 2,000) exterminated, in nearby auschwitz concentration camp. in addition, germans set pow camp allied soldiers , penal camp served transfer camp various german concentration camps. despite german terror, home army units active in area, notably in town , in beskid mountains south of it.


after war, in 1945 wadowice retained powiat town status , until 1975 served notable centre of commerce , transport in kraków voivodeship. after town transferred newly created bielsko-biała voivodeship. after peaceful transformation of political , economical system in poland (in 1989), of local industry found inefficient , went bankrupt. however, ecological , historical heritage of area status birthplace of pope saint john paul ii led fast growth of tourism. more 200,000 people visit wadowice every year , number rising.
