nicholas ashley-cooper born on 3 june 1979, in london, son of anthony ashley-cooper, 10th earl of shaftesbury, , swedish-born christina eva montan (born c. 1940). ashley-cooper s elder brother anthony nils christian ashley-cooper. mother daughter of nils montan, former swedish ambassador germany. lady shaftesbury divorcée son , daughter first marriage, half-siblings of 12th earl of shaftesbury. ashley-cooper succeeded elder brother earldom. 11th earl died on 15 may 2005 of heart attack in manhattan, new york, while visiting younger brother, nicholas.


ashley-cooper attended eton college in youth, father did before him, leaving early, @ age 16, go canford school near home in dorset. later attended manchester university, , read economics , social policy graduating in 2001. in 2008, shaftesbury graduated london business school, earning masters in business administration. while maintaining musical interests, lord shaftesbury has shown interest in supporting charitable organisations, addressing needs of children disabilities, spinal injuries , mental health.


in december 2009, lord shaftesbury suffered serious spinal injuries in riding accident, crushing several vertebrae in fall. while experienced initial paralysis necessitating use of wheelchair, physical therapy has helped restore health point able walk, limitations.
