in 1959, player of year award established recognize best college basketball player of year united states basketball writers association. 5 nominees presented , individual votes receives award during ncaa final four. in 1998, renamed oscar robertson trophy in honor of player won first 2 awards because of outstanding career , continuing efforts promote game of basketball. in 2004, 18 bronze statue of robertson sculpted world-renowned sculptor harry weber.
