in 886 governor of belgrade, in bulgaria, welcomed disciples of cyril , methodius. bulgaria ruled tsar boris, converted christianity in 864. after christianization religious ceremonies conducted in greek byzantine clergy. fearing growing byzantine influence boris viewed adoption of old church slavonic way preserve political independence of bulgaria. such views boris made arrangements establishment of 2 literary academies theology taught in slavonic language. first of schools founded in capital, pliska, , second in ohrid, in region of kutmichevitsa. development of old church slavonic literacy had effect of preventing assimilation neighboring cultures , promoted formation of distinct bulgarian identity. naum moved capital pliska clement, angelarius , possibly gorazd (according other sources, gorazd dead time). in bulgaria spent next 25 years life. naum 1 of founders of pliska literary school worked between 886 , 893. reliable first-hand account of activities @ time in pliska account of letters (o pismenech), treatise on slavic literacy written in old church slavonic, thought composed shortly after 893. piece calls creation of common slavic alphabet. in 893, shortly after rise power, new bulgarian ruler simeon great, summoned ecclesiastical council in new capital preslav, clement ordained bishop of drembica , velika. replace clement in ohrid, simeon sent naum, until had been active in preslav. afterwards naum continued clement s work @ ohrid, important centre of slavic learning. in years cyrillic script created in preslav literary school, , adopted in bulgaria, possibly following naum s initiative. in 905 naum founded monastery on shores of lake ohrid, later received name. died there in 910 , clement initiated process of canonization. in way naum became first “native” saint of bulgaria.
