the alþingishús, collections on show until 1950
the museum remained independent institution inception in 1884 until 1916 when alþingi – icelandic parliament – decided make department in national heritage museum (Þjóðminjasafn Íslands). in 1928 law passed in alþingi on council of culture , under law national gallery came under supervision of said council.
the collection on show @ alþingishús – house of parliament, i.e. in building – 1885 until year 1950 when transferred building of national museum of iceland @ suðurgata. there collection formally opened public in 1951 , in 1961 law passed making museum independent.
in 1987 collection moved yet again new , present location @ fríkirkjuvegur 7. main building erected freezing plant in year 1916, designed renowned icelandic architect guðjón samúelsson. later addition building work of architect garðar halldórsson.
