armenians had trading relations several parts of india, , 7th century few armenian settlements had appeared in kerala, indian state located on malabar coast. armenians controlled large part of international trade of area, particularly in precious stones , quality fabrics.


an archive directory (published 1956) in delhi, india states armenian merchant-cum-diplomat, named thomas cana, had reached malabar coast in 780 using overland route. 7 hundred years thereafter, in year 1498, vasco da gama reached malabar coast sea. thomas cana affluent merchant dealing chiefly in spices , muslins. instrumental in obtaining decree, inscribed on copperplate, rulers of malabar, conferred several commercial, social , religious privileges christians of region. in current local references, thomas cana known knayi thomman or kanaj tomma , meaning thomas merchant.
