history
on 1 june 1943, first superfortress unit—the 58th bombardment wing (very heavy) had been activated @ dobbins afb, marietta, georgia near bell s superfortress plant. on 15 september 1943, headquarters of 58th bw moved smokey hill aaf kansas, of groups near wichita factory. 472nd bombardment group constituted on 19 may 1943 @ smokey hill aaf initial group receive prototype yb-29 , first production b-29 superfortresses. there 5 groups in 58th bomb wing, 472d destined remain @ smoky hill field operational training unit, , others deployed india.
president roosevelt wanted b-29 bombing raids against japan start january 1944. however, delays in b-29 program forced general arnold admit president bombing campaign against japan not begin until may 1944 @ earliest. crews of b-29 needed degree of specialist training not required crews of other, less complex aircraft. took 27 weeks train pilot, 15 train navigator, , 12 train gunner. complexity of b-29 such lengthy process of crew integration had take place before combat deployment begin. end of december 1943, 73 pilots had qualified b-29 , few crews had been brought complete team.
after initial groups of 58th bomb wing completed conversion training on b-29, 472d moved clovis aaf, new mexico in december 1943 begin training follow-on b-29 crews. group involved in secret testing of b-29 suitability in carrying atomic bombs, being developed @ los alamos, new mexico.
in september 1943, b-29 selected carrier atomic bomb. @ first, team responsible adaptation of b-29 atomic bomb provided rough dimensions of bomb, since scientists not yet sure like. technicians fitted new h-frame hoist, carrier assembly , release unit b-29. first drop tests using dummy bombs carried out @ muroc aaf, california on 28 february 1944. these lead fitting of entirely new suspension mechanism b-29.
with these initial tests completed, , b-29 crew training program underway, group inactivated on 1 april 1944.
