international school of photonics

the international school of photonics (isp) came existence in 1995. research activities include design , fabrication of various laser systems , laser components, detailed investigations of non-linear phenomena in different materials using photothermal, photoacoustic , related techniques, time , space resolved studies on laser induced plasmas variety of targets, design , characterization of fibre optic sensors, fabrication , characterization of polymer fibres, preparation , investigation of photonic materials , studies on photonics theory. of these activities supported funding agencies dst, aicte , ugc.

isp @ present offers 4 semester m.tech degree programme in opto electronics , laser technology , ph.d programme. manpower development in modern high technology field , establishment of collaborative research activities various institutions in india , abroad major objectives of isp.many of alumni isp workings in advanced laboratories in various parts of world. 4 of faculty members have won recognition through fellowships/ awards. on 80 research papers published during past 5 years. department conducts workshop/seminar in photonics annually during february. isp has strong collaboration , interaction number of institutions such robert gordon university, u k, nanyang technological university in singapore , tampere university of technology, finland. leading organizations such isro, sameer, nest etc., select students isp through campus interviews. major facilities include master optical parametric oscillator, high power nd: yag laser, 12 watt argon ion laser, optical fibre drawing facility & ring dye laser.

thrust areas of research:

laser technology
fibre optic sensors
nonlinear dynamics
laser induced plasma
photothermal phenomena
laser control chaos
nonlinear optics
polymer optical

in recognition of pioneering work carried out laser group in university during past 2 decades, university grants commission identified cochin university of science , technology “university potential excellence in field of lasers , optoelectronics sciences” in march 2002 , released initial installment of grant of rs.5 crore. following this, “centre of excellence in lasers , optoelectronics sciences (celos)” established in cusat in july 2002. primary objectives of centre initiate , organize teaching, research , extension activities in highly specialized field of lasers , optoelectronics.this major regional facility benefit actual users different departments of cusat other research institutions , universities in part of country. centre has been merged international school of photonics.
