history
the u.s. embassy in kabul elevated in may 1948 u.s. kabul legation. louis goethe dreyfus, served minister plenipotentiary 1940 1942, became u.s. ambassador afghanistan 1949 1951. closed in 1989, before start of long civil war followed taliban takeover. embassy re-opened after us-led operation enduring freedom in late 2001 , under construction until 2006, when u.s. president george w. bush along afghan president hamid karzai held inauguration ceremony. u.s. state department spending $500 million further expand premises, scheduled completed in 2014. however, u.s. state department extended completion date july 2016.
september 2011 attack
heavily armed taliban insurgents wearing suicide vests struck various buildings in kabul on 13 september 2011, , @ least 7 people killed , 19 wounded. u.s. embassy among buildings targeted , several afghan visa applicants waiting @ embassy wounded. no embassy personnel hurt in incident. united states blamed pakistani army , inter-services intelligence (isi) spy network attack. deadly attack @ annex embassy occurred later same month.
april 2012 attack
as part of nationwide series of coordinated attacks, taliban elements attacked embassy on april 15, 2012. attack defeated afghan security forces. gen john allen, commander of international security assistance force, stated enormously proud of response mounted afghan security forces. added: no 1 underestimating seriousness of attacks, , ll work hard determine circumstances led today s events.

on november 30, 2015 embassy issued public warning of imminent terrorist attack in kabul. warning based on credible intelligence saying attacks take place in 2 days. embassy spokeswoman told reporters american citizens, interests, or embassy not threatened.
