umts coverage (3g)
in main centres, vodafone operates umts (3g) service using 2100 mhz band. umts service provided same cell site 900 mhz and/or 1800 mhz gsm services. of existing 900 mhz sites built in 1990s when not expected 2100 mhz network built, hence existing 900 mhz network not @ optimised 2100 mhz service. due fact 900 mhz , 1800 mhz signals propagate further 2100 mhz signals, there many areas beyond 2100 mhz coverage umts phones have hand down 900 mhz or 1800 mhz gsm service. in recent years vodafone has established many individual 2100 mhz umts sites enhance 3g coverage.
in rural areas, vodafone has installed 900 mhz umts (3g) service alongside existing 900 mhz gsm (2g) service. 900 mhz umts service has same coverage area 900 mhz gsm service, instances of umts service being handed down gsm should occur far less in rural areas in areas covered 2100 mhz network. many older umts phones support 2100 mhz service these phones hand down 900 mhz gsm though there umts service available @ 900 mhz.
