the concept of demon lord dante inspired nagai s contact gustave doré-illustated version of dante s divine comedy. found particularly likeable figure of lucifer in inferno huge creature stuck in ice in center of earth . started think in end of 1960s, because of critics receiving precedent works. popular manga until then, harenchi gakuen, erotic comedy set in school, campaigned against parent-teacher associations across japan. tried subvert traditional view of god , devil provocate keepers of standard . such, demon lord dante represents struggle between monster , standard seen through eyes of former , pair of literary critics put it. through manga, nagai wanted show not guys , evil right path.


the manga materialized during 1971 through serialization in kodansha s bokura magazine january issue june issue. however, magazine went defunct , story ended incomplete. first collected version of series published asahi sonorama in 3 volumes released between june , july, 1973. reprinted twice same publisher—in three-volume edition in 1976 , in two-volume version in 1984. chuokoron-shinsha republished manga twice; in single-volume in 1991 , in two-volume reprint in 1995. rereleased kodansha 2 volumes in 1999 , 3 volumes in 2002.


nagai started rewrite unfinished story in march 2002 issue of kodansha s magazine z. divided 4 arcs, each 1 of them being released collected volume in june 2002, december 2002, july 2003, , january 2004, respectively. kamiryaku-hen (神略編) serialized until june 2002 issue; genma-hen (現魔編) published between july 2002 , march 2003; madō-hen (魔道編) april july 2003; , kamima taisen-hen (神魔大戦編) between september 2003 , january 2004 issues. series made available shin maō dante (新魔王ダンテ, lit. new demon lord dante) ebook japan through site on august 9, 2013.
