the right die case of then-comatose karen ann quinlan (march 29, 1954 – june 11, 1985) made legal history in 1975 , 1976, stimulating public scrutiny of ethical , moral implications of case. in 1975, after drinking gin , tonics @ party , taking diazepam, quinlan collapsed, suffered respiratory failure , irreversible brain damage, and, after being taken hospital, lapsed persistent vegetative state. after had been kept alive on ventilator several months without improvement, parents requested hospital discontinue such active care , allow die. hospital refused, , subsequent legal battles made newspaper headlines , set significant precedents. after new jersey supreme court ruled in parents favor, quinlan spent 9 more years comatose in hospital, before dying pneumonia in 1985.
