pêro de anaia, however, did not survive long. in march 1506, few days after bantu assault on fort, anaia himself fell victim malarial fevers , died @ sofala. portuguese factor, manuel fernandes de meireles, apparently european man immune fevers, elected remained of sick garrison acting captain of sofala.
