the microgravity vibration isolation mount (mim) experiment operated canadian space agency astronaut bjarni tryggvason. mim experiment small double-locker size device designed isolate international space station payloads , experiments disturbances created thruster firings or crew activity. mim operated 30 hours real-time data transmission investigators on ground. another experiment onboard sts-85 southwest ultraviolet imaging system (swuis-01) southwest research institute (swri) along scientific collaborators jpl, apl, , university of maryland. swuis (pronounced, swiss ) wide-field uv imager used observe comet hale-bopp. based around 18-cm maksutov uv telescope , uv-sensitive, xybion image-intensified ccd camera frames @ video rates (30 hz). each swuis observation period lasted approximately 3 hours, , garnered approximately 10^5 images in 7 filter bandpasses. swuis operated 2-axis mount inside shuttle mid-deck cockpit, , looked out of shuttle through quartz window. swuis can pointed anywhere in 4.5 deg cone around centerline of comet. mission specialists set , operated instrument.


on day 8, crew awakened song go moon canadian artists moxy früvous, selected astronaut marc garneau, first canadian in space.


the mission lasted day longer planned due threat of ground fog @ kennedy space center.
