settled in prehistoric times, south-eastern poland region subcarpathia overrun in pre-roman times various tribes, including celts (anarti), goths , vandals (przeworsk culture , púchov culture). after fall of roman empire, of of south-eastern poland part (all parts below san)[<what evidence last assertion? there not appear documented roman marcing camps of forts, or settlements], area invaded hungarians , slavs.


the region subsequently became part of great moravian state. upon invasion of hungarian tribes heart of great moravian empire around 899, lendians of area declared allegiance hungarian empire. region became site of contention between poland, kievan rus , hungary starting in @ least 9th century.


the first traces of settlement in area of modern sanok date @ least 9th century. following century slavic fortified town (gord) created there , served center of pagan worship. etymology of name unclear, though scholars derive celtic river-name san. archaeological excavations performed on castle hill , on fajka hill near sanok-trepcza, not confirm written resources, date sanok stronghold origin 9th century. on fajka hill, first settlement of sanok situated, remains of ancient sanctuary , cemetery found, numerous decorations , encolpions in kievan type. found 2 seals of great kievan prince rurik rostislavich second half of 12th century.
