department of electronics
the department of electronics established in 1975. has microwave electronics instrumentation , microprocessor research laboratories , doctoral programmes in fields such underwater acoustics, ocean electronics, microwave propagation antennas, microwave image processing, pattern recognition, microprocessor applications in signal processing , display devices.
the department offers postgraduate programmes include m.sc. electronics , m.tech electronics specializations in microwave & radar electronics , digital electronics. external agencies dst, isro, aicte, doe, drdo, mod , state government support department through research projects , fellowships. department conducts 2 national symposia biennial events — national symposium on antennas & propagation (apsym). commenced 1988 , – symposium on ocean electronics (sympol) – 1991 onwards. department has established international collaboration delft university (netherlands), polarizone corporation (malaysia), university of kent (england) , university of surrey (england) different research projects.

the department of instrumentation established in year 1995. though relatively young teaching , research department, has long history of evolution derived university science instrumentation centre (usic). usic established in university in 1978 service department assistance ugc. usic has been extending instrumentation services various science , technology departments of university way of design , fabrication, glass blowing, carpentry work etc. has been carrying out consultancy work other academic institutions, r & d organizations , industries well. centre elevated status of academic department in year 1995. 1999 onwards, department offering 4 years (8 semesters) b.tech course in instrumentation technology. m.sc degree course in instrumentation started in 2011.
the department has active research programmes in areas of instrumentation , applied physics. department has implemented several research projects sponsored external funding agencies dst, dae, ugc, aicte, kscste , twas. has been venue many national symposia , faculty members have published several research papers in reputed national , international journals. department extends instrumentation services sister departments. offers consultancy design/fabrication of experimental systems teaching/research, calibration/industrial applications

the department of polymer science , rubber technology (p.s. & r.t.) established in 1971 1 of pioneers in area of education , research in polymer science , engineering. in collaboration rubber research institute of india b.tech. programme started in year 1972. starting of m.tech. programme in year 1985 major milestone in growth of department. highly motivated faculty members experience in universities outside india have credit 650 research publications in internationally reputed journals. department has been organizing international seminar series, advance in polymer technology, apt, since 2002 bring polymer scientists, technologists , engineers, working in academic institutions, industry , research organizations common platform. alumni of department in senior positions in major polymer based industries, in india , in multinational corporations.

the department has completed major projects sponsored nuffic (mho, netherlands), volkswagen foundation (germany), mhrd, aicte, drdo, dst, , ugc. department has had successful collaborative association eindhoven university of technology (tue) , university of twente, netherlands.

the department 1 of pioneers in field of naval architecture education in india, established in 1974. b.tech programme in naval architecture , ship building started in 1975. in technical collaboration university of rostock, germany since 1978, producing naval architects meet requirements of shipbuilding industry, ship classification societies, r&d organisations, indian navy , other organisations. department maintains collaborations iits, universities outside india, naval science , technological laboratory (nstl), vizag , shipyards. these organisations extend facilities , expertise impart training b.tech students.
the ministry of shipping, government of india, approved b.tech course m.o.t. certificate examination. indian navy has recognised department centre higher education of officers. department has library, computer centre, laboratories , workshops. faculty have on 100 research publications. course accredited royal institution of naval architects (rina), uk satisfying engineering council (uk) requirements registration @ stage 1 of chartered engineer section. academic collaboration took birth chosun university, republic of korea in 2003 whereby exchange of students , faculty members take place.

the international school of photonics (isp) came existence in 1995. research activities include design , fabrication of various laser systems , laser components, detailed investigations of non-linear phenomena in different materials using photothermal, photoacoustic , related techniques, time , space resolved studies on laser induced plasmas variety of targets, design , characterization of fibre optic sensors, fabrication , characterization of polymer fibres, preparation , investigation of photonic materials , studies on photonics theory. of these activities supported funding agencies dst, aicte , ugc.
isp @ present offers 4 semester m.tech degree programme in opto electronics , laser technology , ph.d programme. manpower development in modern high technology field , establishment of collaborative research activities various institutions in india , abroad major objectives of isp.many of alumni isp workings in advanced laboratories in various parts of world. 4 of faculty members have won recognition through fellowships/ awards. on 80 research papers published during past 5 years. department conducts workshop/seminar in photonics annually during february. isp has strong collaboration , interaction number of institutions such robert gordon university, u k, nanyang technological university in singapore , tampere university of technology, finland. leading organizations such isro, sameer, nest etc., select students isp through campus interviews. major facilities include master optical parametric oscillator, high power nd: yag laser, 12 watt argon ion laser, optical fibre drawing facility & ring dye laser.

in recognition of pioneering work carried out laser group in university during past 2 decades, university grants commission identified cochin university of science , technology “university potential excellence in field of lasers , optoelectronics sciences” in march 2002 , released initial installment of grant of rs.5 crore. following this, “centre of excellence in lasers , optoelectronics sciences (celos)” established in cusat in july 2002. primary objectives of centre initiate , organize teaching, research , extension activities in highly specialized field of lasers , optoelectronics.this major regional facility benefit actual users different departments of cusat other research institutions , universities in part of country. centre has been merged international school of photonics.

the department of computer applications (dca) established in 1994 offering mca programme financial support , model curriculum ugc , department of electronics, government of india, facilitate research , human resource development in subject. syllabus being updated periodically according latest technology. information security, simulation , modelling, cryptography , coding theory, language computing, algorithm, pattern recognition, web mining, graph theory , applications, image processing, data mining, networking , software engineering major research areas.

dcs offers 2 full-time m.tech programmes, having due approval of aicte. research programmes leading phd in computer science / computer engineering in information science, offered. started in academic year 1984-85, dcs has been in forefront in offering cutting edge courses, in supporting cusat in computer related activities. seeding agent in establishing computer centre in 1989, support ugc , drdo, , has been managing centre. 5 batches of students of m.sc in computer software had graduated dcs, serve drdo laboratories. cusat intranet conceived , commissioned dcs; manages net, along web- server , e-mail server. has supported , enriched mca programme during programme’s brief stint @ dcs.
grants amounting total of around rs.10.0 crores received several funding agencies managed dcs based on projects has initiated. agencies include mhrd, drdo, ugc, aicte, dst , nuffic of royal government of netherlands. 2 projects funded isro have been implemented; more in offing.
while major focus of research on information systems, departmental research interests span computer science spectrum, well. recent publications cover topics in high speed computing, human-computer interaction, information security, networked embedded system, natural language processing, software engineering, vlsi, etc.
