training
overview

training student nfos starts (snfos) starts out same student naval aviators (snas), same academic requirements , identical physical requirements. real distinction in physical requirements, snfos may have less 20/20 uncorrected distant vision. in fact, 20/20 distant visual acuity requirement typically routes prospective naval aviators naval flight officer training track. both snas , snfos go through same introductory flight screening , aviation preflight indoctrination before splitting off respective primary training squadrons.

the snfo program has continued evolve since 1960s. today, snfos train under undergraduate military flight officer (umfo) program @ training wing 6 (trawing six) @ nas pensacola, alongside foreign students various nato, allied , coalition navies , air forces. student nfos begin primary training @ training squadron ten (vt-10), flying same t-6 texan ii trainer sna counterparts, moving on advanced training @ training squadron 4 (vt-4) or training squadron eighty-six (vt-86). upon graduation respective advanced squadron, students receive wings of gold , aeronautically designated naval flight officers. after winging, students conduct follow-on training @ respective fleet replacement squadron (frs).

nfo training squadrons

introductory flight screening

all snfos , snas start aviation training introductory flight screening (ifs). ifs consists of 2 phases: ground school , flight training. ground school portion lasts 2 weeks , culminates student completing faa private pilot exam. afterwards, every student enrolls in 1 of several civilian flight schools located near nas pensacola. students complete approximately 14 hours of flight training in single engine aircraft, including solo flight. ifs waived students entering training private pilot license.

aviation preflight indoctrination

snfos train navy, marine corps, , coast guard snas along nato , allied students in sna , snfo tracks, and, periodically, student naval flight surgeons. aviation preflight indoctrination (api) consists of academic instruction, hands-on interaction , aviation physiology, water survival, , land survival skills.

the academic topics taught in api of following:

aerodynamics
aircraft engines , systems
weather
air navigation
flight rules , regulations

after academic phase, students complete:

aerospace physiology
egress training
water survival training
land survival training

primary 1

after completing api, snfos report vt-10 under training wing 6 begin primary 1 training. training in vt-10 done in beechcraft t-6a texan ii , consists of 3 phases (all phases consist of ground school, simulator events, , flight events):

contact phase (aircraft systems, emergency procedures, basic communication, take-off/landing, elps, spins, precision aerobatics, course rules)
instrument phase (instrument flight procedures, flight planning, voice communication)
visual navigation phase (visual flight procedures, tactical route construction, precision aerobatics)

after graduating primary 1, snfos select between maritime land-based aviation or tailhook carrier aviation. students selected land-based platforms (e.g., p-3 orion, p-8 poseidon, e-6 mercury) continue on advanced maritime command , control curriculum @ vt-4. select carrier aviation continue primary 2 training , remain @ vt-10.

primary 2

primary 2 training done through vt-10. shorter syllabus , consists of 2 phases:

instrument phase (simulators , flights flown @ faster airspeed , used bolster instrument procedures)
formation phase (ground school , flights used introduce formation flying, tactical maneuvers, parade sequence, etc.)

after graduating primary 2, snfos select:

e-2c/d hawkeye
strike jet aircraft

e-2c/d hawkeye selectees continue on advanced maritime command , control curriculum @ vt-4, while jet selectees continue intermediate training , remain @ vt-10.

intermediate

snfos stay in vt-10 , continue fly in t-6a texan ii. training consists of 4 phases:

single ship instrument phase (building upon instrument procedures in primary 1 , 2, vfr pattern, gps navigation)
section instrument phase (instrument flying in formation)
tactical formation phase (rendezvous, tactical formation, tail-chase)
section visual navigation phase (visual navigation flying in formation)

advanced maritime command , control

after primary, students have selected e-2s or land-based maritime aviation (p-3, p-8, ep-3, e-6) check vt-4 advanced maritime command , control (mc2) training. mc2 program developed allow snfos receive advanced platform-specific training while still @ nas pensacola, , receive wings before progressing respective fleet replacement squadron (frs) training in ultimate operational combat aircraft. mc2 training conducted in multi-crew simulator (mcs), new simulator system allows students train independently, single-ship crew, or multi-ship mission. mc2 training has 2 phases: core , strand.

core

snfos begin mc2 training in core syllabus. these classes include combination of snfos e-2c/d selectees , land-based maritime selectees. training in phase builds upon instrument training primary , includes:

operational flight planning, instruments, , navigation (international flight rules , tacan navigation)
communications , navigation systems (comm systems , ins, gps, , radar theory , navigation)
sensor , link operations (radar, iff, , ir theory , data link employment)
fleet operations

upon completion of core training, snfos progressed mc2 training primary 1 (land-based maritime selectees) select fleet platform. choices are: e-6b mercury, p-3c orion, ep-3e aries ii, , p-8a poseidon. when platform selection complete, snfos remain @ vt-4 strand training.

strand

strand training platform-specific training via mcs, allowing snfos begin learning responsibilities on fleet aircraft. development of program relieves frss teaching snfos basics of naval aviation , focus more on advanced fleet tactics, providing fleet mission-capable nfos. upon completion of strand training, students receive wings of gold , aeronautically designated naval flight officers.

snfos progress through 1 or 2 of 4 strands, depending on platform select:

e-2c, e-2d
maritime patrol , reconnaissance (mpr): p-3c, ep-3e, , p-8a selectees
e-6b
common navigation: prerequisite strand mpr , e-6 strands.

the e-2 strand consists of:

airborne warning (e-2 capabilities , mission overview)
air intercept control (airborne battlefield command , control, tactics, , strike techniques)

the common navigation strand consists of:

publications , charts
overwater navigation , communication procedures
navigation logs

the mpr strand consists of:

surface search , littoral surveillance (community overview, target identification, sensor employment)
electronic warfare , acoustic operations (ew introduction, sonar theory)
maritime patrol , reconnaissance (coordinated operations)

the e-6 strand consists of:

communications , operations (community overview, operations, strategic command structure)

advanced strike

snfos report vt-86 , fly in t-45c goshawk. training consists of 5 phases:

contact phase (t-45 systems, emergency procedures, carrier operations, night operations, communications)
strike phase (air-to-ground radar, low level flying, mission planning, fuel awareness)
close air support phase (cas procedures , communications)
basic fighter maneuver phase (bfm practice)
all weather intercepts phase (air-to-air radar, air intercepts, gps)

after graduating advanced strike training, navy snfos select:

ea-18g growler
f/a-18f super hornet

marine snfos select:

f/a-18d hornet
